The 8a application is supposed to run smoothly. Once you have completed  the online 8a application and sent the printed copies to the SBA Review Center,  the clock starts ticking.  Normally you will receive an email back in about 10 business days letting you know the status of your application. They will let you know it has been accepted, rejected or it needs more information.

If it is accepted, then the SBA is supposed to complete the review process in 90 days.  However with the glut of small businesses applying, it can take several months to hear back from them.

If your application is rejected or needs additional information, they will send you a “to do list” to complete within a specific time frame.  Gather the documents and get them back as quickly as possible.

Can you speed up the process?  Yes, make sure your application is complete when you submit it.   Respond promptly to requests.  And when you submit your application, do not put it in a binder, just place the documents in order – according to the checklist – and place in a manila folder with a rubber band to keep it in place.

Are you ready to apply?  Take the guesswork out and get some upfront coaching before you apply.
